Winter Trip - Part 4 - Willow Creek - Day 2

The next morning in Willow Creek, I was excited to get up and start checking out all the sights.
I had spent some of the night doing surveillance out of my cabin window watching the deer grazing outside, hoping they would lure a Sasquatch in.

The town is about a mile wide, from east to west. It basically has a gas station, a few restaurants and 4 Bigfoot statues. They're isnt that many people, but everyone is very cool and they don't have the "Murderous Back-Woods vibe" that you would expect in a town that is so isolated.

For breakfast, we went to the "Bigfoot Restaurant" which was formerly called, "Cinnabar Sams".

Outside of the restaurant across the street is the famous "Bigfoot Mural" on the side of the Ace Hardware.  It's about 60 yards long and show's Bigfoot working alongside the community, like he is the Jimmy Carter of Willow Creek!

Famous in my mind at least.

In front of Ace Hardware they have another statue. This one is an oversized version of the one you see in the "SkyMall" ads on airplanes.

This one has more of a "Cowardly Lion" hairdo.

Next up is the world famous "Bigfoot Museum."  This is the museum you see in all of the Bigfoot Books and TV Specials.  The Smithsonian of Sasquatch History and research. 

The museum had been closed for the off season since September, but they opened it for us.

Willow Creek was basically built by the Chinese and used to be called "China Flat"

It's been around for a while. 

On a serious note, this town is AWESOME. The people are super friendly and there is a great "Bigfoot Vibe" in the air. If your into this stuff, you should definitely go visit.  As much as a global phenomenon that Bigfoot is, the town is very low-key. I really think that people should donate money to the Bigfoot Museum so they can get some TV's in there and some updated exhibits.
 Whether you believe in it or not, there is no doubt that Bigfoot is a extremely interesting part of American History, and it should be preserved and showcased well.

Winter Trip - Part 3 - Willow Creek (Day 1)

We arrived in Willow Creek around 6:45pm. It was already dark out because of some science thing with the Earth and the Sun.  But here is where it gets interesting......

When I saw the sign for "Willow Creek" I had to stop and get a picture. The sign is just on the outskirts of the small town.  So there are a few house's around but like 1 every mile or so.
When I got out of the car to take the picture, I could hear a bunch of dogs barking, which sounded about 150 yards away.

"No big deal,  I just wanted to get my picture and get back in the car"

Then, in the middle of the barking, came a clear distinct, "whoop" noise came from the woods.
The same type of "whooping" noise that has been recorded of sasquatch.
Sarah said,  "Did you hear that "whoop?" I said "Yeah", but it seemed all too convenient that we just happened to hear that right when we rolled into Willow Creek.
We don't know for sure what the noise was, but since we were in a "Bigfoot State of Mind" and those dogs were going nuts, I'm gonna chalk it up to being a "Sasquatch whoop"

Anyways, the visit was already off to a great start.  So lets check out some pictures from the first night in Willow Creek,  The Bigfoot capital of the world!

Paradise City

The town is nestled deep within the mountains off the Trinity River in Humbolt County, CA.
But enough of that Geography talk, lets see some Bigfoot stuff.

Below is a picture of the world famous Bigfoot Motel,
This is where Patterson and Gimlin stayed before capturing it on film that day in 1967
 They were broke so they probably had to share a bed.

Behind the Motel they have a huge Bigfoot cage for people like me to play in.
It's beats a pool and a continental breakfast any day!
Apparently they built this back in the day to catch Sasquatches but stopped using it.

We walked up past the hotel and ran into a local Indian Guy. We asked him if he had any encounters with Bigfoot and he said that Bigfoot is a spiritual creature and people who seek it have problems.
Well.... that was awkward!   Moving on!

It was getting late and we had more sights to see the next day. So it was time to settle into my shelter that I made out of a few sticks and some long grass.  It turned out pretty well!

Winter Trip - Part 2 - Bigfoot Country

We left Portland the morning of Friday 12/28.  Taking the 5 freeway down through Oregon to Northern California, heading west on Hwy 96 down the "Bigfoot Scenic Byway" which ends in the town of Willow Creek. Its about a 6 hour drive through mountainous, snowy terrain and you can go like 2 hours without services.  It's not exactly the best drive for someone in a rental car who has never driven in the Pacific Northwest.  But Fuck it, you only live once right!

The first stop was in Eugene, Oregon. Just outside of Eugene is a place called "Ike's Pizza" where they have the famous "Bigfoot & Beer" meetings where people get together and tell their Sasquatch encounter stories. But since it's like 25 minutes outside town we didn't get a chance to stop. But I wanted to make a note of it in case some extreme Bigfoot fan reads this and accuses me of not knowing my shit!  So back off! ... now, back to the boring photos.

Eugene is the home of the Oregon Ducks.

When you get to the bottom of Oregon you hit Ashland, which is known for their annual Shakespeare festival.  Time for a bathroom break.

Once you get out of Ashland the drive get's a little more serious.
The snow came as we headed to the mountains.

Next Exit, 300 miles.

"Can you check the glove box for some snow chains?"

We got off the 5 freeway and entered Highway 96 which will lead you into the middle of Northern California.  This stretch of freeway is not advised during this time of year.

When you enter the forest it gets hardcore real fast.

Bigfoot Country

HAPPY CAMP
The first town associated with Bigfoot is Happy Camp, CA. As soon as you get there you can't miss the giant Bigfoot statue that welcomes you to town.  This is something I've seen for years in all the books and websites. It was super exciting.

BLUFF CREEK
Its about 90 miles between Happy Camp and Willow Creek. But it takes like 2 hours because of all the twists and turns, you can only go like 40 miles an hour at the most. About 30 miles away from Willow Creek is Bluff Creek. It's the site of the famous "Patterson Gimlin Film" from 1967, which is the film that is what usually inspires people to become interested in Bigfoot in the first place. The actual film site is way up in the mountain and not accessible in the Winter, but it was still cool to be nearby, knowing all of the history to this world famous location.

Winter Trip - Part 1 - Portland

Here is Part 1 of my winter trip adventure in the Pacific Northwest. I took a ton of photo's so I'll try to be as simple and sarcastic as possible so this blog doesn't turn into a glorified Facebook page. (...too late)

One of my New Years Resolutions for 2012 was to perform stand up comedy in a new State. Since I had CA, NV, AZ already covered, my closest option was Oregon, so I had to rock that out before the end of the year.  So off to Portland it is!

Looks like Expedia has me flying Cargo, with 6 layovers.  Gate 69.

It's Christmas time so Portland has their tree up.

The only present ... Homeless People!

The downtown square looked pretty cool with the Christmas tree, but along the sides were tons of local vagrants. The city has a huge homeless population and they all have dogs.
With all the food trucks and pan handling it looks like a set from "Game of Thrones"

Right now, the show "Portlandia" is pretty hip, with over 100 viewers it is the IFC channel's biggest hit.  The whole city is either strongly "for" or "against" it. But either way they are cashing in because now they are known for something else besides being a poor man's Seattle.
 I meant to take more pictures of the "Portlandia" filming locations, but I forgot to print out a list.  But it turns out I took pictures of some of the places on accident.
Like "Mary's Club" Nudie Bar.  Which appears in the opening credits.

Do I have to pay a cover if I just jerk off in the street?

We came across "Mary's Club" because we were eating at a Mexican Restaurant next door called "Santeria's" and they share a bathroom.  So when I went to take a leak, I got to take in a free nudie show. Talk about beating the system!

Actually the "Santeria" restaurant has really great food and the staff was pretty cool too. Definitely worth checking out,  I don't have the address, but you obviously have the internet so you will figure it out.

Ok, now lets cruise around the city and check some things out.
When I get to a new city, I usually like to keep things "low key" and try not to make a scene.
I try to travel "under the radar" so I picked the appropriate vehicle.

MOTHER'S RESTAURANT
When you travel with a woman, the whole trip can become a blur of "Getting Coffee"
and "Yelp Reviews." So I seem to get stuck eating at places I would never go.
Like "Mother's Restaurant"

The inside of "Mother's" is rich in history. It's pretty famous in town and is always busy.
It seems like one of those places where they would film reenactments for shows about "Hauntings" on the Discovery channel.

It's cold as hell up there this time of year. I should have packed more than just my tank tops and thongs.

Portland is nicknamed "Bridgetown" because its so boring.

VOODOO DOUGHNUTS
Every city has an "over hyped" restaurant that has lines around the block.
In Los Angeles it's "Pink's Hot Dogs" and whatever trendy Burger place some tool "Tweets" about that week.
These "Yelp Traps" are usually just good at wasting peoples time, because you have to wait for 2 hours in line just to be underwhelmed. In Portland that place is called "VooDoo Doughnuts."

But don't worry, you will never know, because everyone will pretend its the greatest thing they ever ate.  Its the same type of people that pretended to like the movie "The Master." so they can seem deep.

There better be a DMV inside.

I'm sure this place is fine, I didn't have time to actually try a doughnut because I was only in town for 48 hours. The wait time was 49.
* I always feel bad when I make fun of these type of places because I have no business writing negative stuff about them without even going inside. But I feel better knowing that nobody reads this and I'm the one sitting in my underwear watching "Animal Planet" right now.

The next stop was "Jackpot Records", one of the many record stores in town. I stop in every one looking for rare "Guns N Roses" stuff.  I found a bootleg illegal copy of "Chinese Democracy" for my collection.

Some say every copy of "Chinese Democracy" should be illegal.

POWELL BOOKS
Another Portland landmark is Powell Books. Powell's occupy's a full city block and is the worlds largest book store. It also doubles as the worlds largest Homeless shelter.

Somewhere in this place is an IKEA.

We then went back to the hotel to get ready for the 2 stand up comedy shows that night.
I went on the balcony and waved to the city like Madonna in "Evita."

CURIOUS COMEDY
My first show was at the Curious Comedy Theater.

Is this thing on? Oh, It is. That's the problem.

Everyone was great at the Curious Comedy show. I also met a cool group of local Portland comics.

The 2nd show was at the "Gypsy" Lounge. We then headed over to the "Helium" comedy club.
